You’re Sick? You Don’t Need A Massage

Part of my job as a massage therapist is to educate you on the reasons why you should get a massage, but there are times when you shouldn’t get a massage. During this past week, members of my family have been at different stages of some bug that has been going around lately, and I thought now would be a good time to let you know why you shouldn’t get a massage while you are sick.

Reasons Not To Get A Massage

  • Massages can make you sicker, faster.  Since massage gets your blood circulating better, it will make your illness spread more efficiently, too.  Massage can turn a minor head cold into a full-on illness.
  • Getting sick is your body’s way of telling you to slow down and rest.  Sure, a massage is relaxing, but it is actually work for your body to respond to the stimulating touch techniques.  Bodies can’t heal when they are working.
  • Finally, if you are sick with a cold or flu, think about all the people you can potentially infect.  If you have a virus, you might pass that illness unintentionally to a line of others.
